Standardized Testing

Below offers information relating to common standardized tests, as well as where to register.

SAT

What is it?

  • The SAT is a standardized test/entrance exam that is commonly used for college admissions in the United States. It measures a students readiness for college, and the scores should be submitted along with your applications.
  • There are two sections on the 3 hour test, consisting of math and evidenced-based reading and writing, and is scored out of 1600 points.

When should you take the SAT?

  • Most students take the SAT during the spring of their junior year, and also have the option of taking it a final time in the fall of their senior year.
  • Remember, taking the PSAT during your sophomore and/or junior year can help you to prepare by working on areas that can be improved!

English Language Testing

  • In addition to the SAT & ACT, most colleges require proof of language proficiency for students whose first language is not English.
  • There are several tests that colleges except, including: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), PTE (Pearson Test of English), MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment battery).
  • But, if an international student was taught English and has attended all four years of high school in the US, some colleges may waive their English language testing requirement.

ACT

What is it?

  • The ACT is very similar to the SAT, except it is scored out of 36 points.
  • If you are planning to take this test, which I highly recommend, you should do so around the same time as the SAT. The sections on this test include:  English, Math, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing section.
  • The cost varies depending on which version of test you take:

                                 No Writing Section Fee: $63.00

                                 With Writing Section Fee: $88.00
